'This is fine' (2025), meme inspired painting by Kase, The Caffeinated Hippo

'This is fine' meme inspired painting was created under one of those spontaneous moments, the kind where it is so impulsive and immediate you can’t think about anything else. With everything that is going on in the world and everyday there just seems to be new things that are added to the fire, I had to make this painting.

What makes this painting even funnier (better?) and more nihilistic is that this painting glows in the dark.

Process and Concepts

Inspired by KC Green's comic and the 'This is Fine' meme
Inspired by KC Green's comic and the 'This is Fine' meme

Inspired by the meme created by KC Green, I created this painting with subtle nods to my life. Such as the cat plushie has glowing eyes in the dark, just like it’s namesake.

It also contains a small replica of my painting ‘Flying High II’ on the wall which is one of the first paintings that I’ve made that authentically felt like me. It brings me such joy and peace looking at it from it’s traditional renaissance type colour palette and the harmonious composition of the clouds and birds. Yet, often I find that the feeling of anxiety and remnants of cortisol are coursing through too due to the nature of the process of my painting. I often leave my underlayer exposed in my paintings, deliberately leaving them ‘unfinished’. My paintings reflect memories and in memories, every single detail is not always revealed or remembered. There’s still gaps to fill. ‘Flying High II’ was the first large painting I created in this way so for the entire time it took to paint the birds, I held my breath as they were flying over my underlayer.

Despite that, I absolutely love ‘Flying High II’ and it sits proudly in my studio waiting to go for its forever home. Every morning, before I start painting, I drink my coffee and look at this abstract sunset. It might be coffee, but it always gives me a sense of calm and motivation before I start painting. With that in mind, I had to include that painting in this one, which lil’ Jack as the artist.

The paint palette contains the same colours as ‘Flying High II’. The paint is slowly dripping onto the table which is a fear of mine. Having just moved into a rented place, there is always that fear of dropping a paintbrush or my paint water (something I used to do weekly in my old place). And Conor if you’re reading this, I promise this is just a fear and it isn’t something that has just happened…

Every artist has had the misfortune of drinking their paint water or putting their paint brush in their coffee so I had to have included this aspect in the painting too. They are based on actual cups that my best friend has brought for me! A gift that I treasure and makes me laugh every time.

To conclude, 'This is Fine' meme inspired painting:

I have had so much fun making this painting. I kept the iconic 'Brat' green that KC Green made because of it's unsettling hue. Bright, murky green is often associated with disgust and the disorientating aura which is perfect for the concepts and mood of this painting.

This painting was a great way to laugh but also pay homage to what seems like the inevitable in today's world. I hope that this painting has made you smile like it did when I was making it.
